Implications of AI in Dairy Cattle Breeding

Concerns
  • General public was against research that had anything to do with sex.
  • AI would lead to abnormalities.
  • Influential cattle breeders opposed AI because they believed it would destroy their bull market.
Reality
  • Field research proved that the technology could identify superior production bulls free from lethal genes.
  • Reduced venereal disease.
  • The calves born form AI were healthy.
  • Peoples fear were overcome by positive facts.
  • It did destroy the bull market for influential breeders.

The Implications of Genomics
Summary of our observations.
Concerns
  • Farmers are sceptical of test that predicts animals breeding potential.
  • Genomics will ruin the breed.
  • Disrupts the marketing system that relies on mature bulls that produce high volumes of semen.
Reality
  • Genomic is already identifying more lethal and non desirable genes to improve the breed.
  • Reduces generation interval and can improve rate of genetic improvement.
  • Offspring from genomic bulls are in high demand.
  • Early results support predictions.
  • Influential cattle breeders look forward to testing in 2013 it will improve the bull market.
